More Than Just GoldAn Intimate Look at Wells
PHOTOJOURNALISM STUDENT MOLLY MCNULTY TURNS HER LENS ON WELLS
Perspective is an interesting thing. If you asked five people to describe the same scene, chances are you'd get five different perspectives. That's why it's always refreshing to get a new point-of-view on an old topic. In this case the topic is Wells, and the point-of-view is provided by Molly McNulty, a Photojournalism student from Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario.
Molly, who is orginally from Quesnel, made her way to the community at the end of October 2007, and with the welcome of local citizens spent a few days shooting pictures in and around Wells, focusing on the theme of "a sense of place and community in Canada."
What follows is a selection of pictures from Molly's shoot. Click on thumbnails to view a larger image. All images Copyright Molly McNulty.

Gold Rush Sled Dog Mail Run January 24-27
PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY FOR THE 2008 EVENT - KICK-OFF TO BC 15O CELEBRATIONS

The Gold Rush Trail Sled Dog Association invites you to join them for the 16th running of the annual Gold Rush Trail Dog Sled Mail Run, the only opportunity in the world to arrange to have an envelope delivered by dog team through the regular postal system.
The Mail Run was initiated in 1993 as a demonstration sport in the Northern British Columbia Winter Games. Since this beginning, the Mail Run has evolved from a highly competitive 235 mile long qualifier for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, to a stage race event featuring six dog, eight dog and unlimited classes, to the multi-faceted non-competitive participation event that it is today.
To add to the excitement, this year, the Mail Run is also a major “kick-off” event for the year-long and province-wide BC150 Years celebrations. The BC150 Years Kick-off Rally is scheduled to commence at 7:00 p.m., Thursday January 24th at the Atrium of the UNBC/CNC Complex in Quesnel. The Official Mail Run Ceremonial Send-Off will take place on Friday January 25th beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Alex Fraser Park in downtown Quesnel.
The trail for 2008 runs 60 miles (100 kilometres) from Quesnel to Barkerville to Wells B.C., in places along the actual historic Cariboo Waggon Road. For the purposes of the Mail Run, the total route has been broken into smaller sections or stages. The best opportunity for the public to view the dog sledders is on the final stage of the trip, from Barkerville to Wells.
This section, called The Barkerville Dash, will commence at 1:30 p.m., even if all of the participants have not completed the Stanley to Barkerville trail. Covering a distance of 5 miles (9 kilometres), this is a fun race for teams of three to six dogs, passengers are allowed. This event, which is essentially a mass start sprint race, is open to all participants, dog teams, skiers, skijorers, and snowshoers are encouraged to participate.
The trail is a straight, flat run along the meadow between Barkerville and Wells. Every participant contributes a prize and the Dash will end at the Bear's Paw Café in Wells where dog trucks will be waiting, prizes will be awarded, the mail will be turned over to Canada Post and the 16th Annual Gold Rush Trail Sled Dog Mail Run will wind up. At this point participants are free to leave for home or they might like to spend some time in Wells enjoying the many trails.

Wells Best Seniors "Meeting Place"
PROVINCIAL GRANT HELPS IN THE CREATION OF LOCAL SENIOR'S DROP-IN CENTRE
The Wells Best Seniors have been awarded a Grant to create a senior’s drop-in centre. This “Meeting Place” will be located in the room off the back entrance of the community hall, next to the Library.
The room will be used for a variety of community programs, including health clinics, workshops, socials, and weekly drop in sessions. It will also provide a central location for senior volunteers to develop outreach programs to other seniors and to others in the community.
Cost for an annual membership will be determined at a later date and will be available beginning in the fall of 2008 for anyone 55 years of age and over. Work on the room will begin in early January 2008 and will be done primarily by volunteers.
If you are willing to help work on the room, please try to attend our AGM on January 16th at 6:00 at the Wells Hotel Restaurant. RSVP to Carol McGregor at 994-3330 if you plan to attend so that she can reserve enough tables.
